Career Tips From (Other) Chicks

Over the weekend I ran a small incentive program on the Hot Tips For Career Chicks Facebook page and asked the Career Chick community to share with me some of their favourite career tips.

The tips came in from around the world and they were all so great that I wanted to share them with you here:

Dianne Hone from Australia and Mia Fergusson from England both contributed tips for job interviews.

Dianne wrote: "Be aware that an interview is a DUAL process, be well prepared and relaxed because you should use this process to help you decide whether you want the job if it is offered to you!"

This is so true. No matter how much research you have done beforehand, an interview is one of the best ways for you to gather information about the job, the company and your potential manager. And the quality of the questions that you ask can also be a big influence on the decision to offer you the job.

Mia added, "Do you research for the specific job you are going for, be prepared."

Preparation is absolutely key to getting the job you want. The Internet, your network and the information provided by the company are all great places to start.

Patricia Dodd and Natalie Krivushenko both contributed tips related to the people you know.

Patricia advised, "Have a mentor. It helps when you have a 'Yoda' or two in your career."

(Yoda, of course being the fictional wise leader and mentor to the Jedi's in a number of the Star Wars movies!)

Natalie reminded us of the importance of having a number of contacts with the tip to, "Network, network, network. It's not what you know or who you know - it's who knows YOU!"

And Helene Bedard from Canada posted about earlier tips from this blog about how to get started on a career plan. (Which was great to see they had been appreciated ☺)

Career Chicks have many good ideas. I learned my tips from either trial and error or from the generous people who gave me a helping hand along the way. Personally I am a big fan of the helping hand. Trial and error can lead to those hands being burned along the way.

So the Career Chick Hot Tip for today is: Share what you learn!

(Hint: You can get in some practise and share some of your tips on this blog post!)

That's all for now,

Karen
